December Birthstones

Happy birthday month, December babies!

You have not one, or two, but THREE stunning birthstones to choose from! If you like to have options, you’re in luck—December is all about blue hues in the form of tanzanite, turquoise, and zircon. Check out these gorgeous gems:

Tanzanite

Tanzanite rings

Tanzanite is December's most popular birthstone. Named after its origin of Tanzania, this beautiful gemstone is known for its unique bluish-purple color. If you’re a fan of sapphires or amethysts, you'll probably love tanzanite, too!

Unlike sapphire, tanzanite is a softer gem, measuring 6.5 – 7 out of 10 on the Mohs scale of hardness. While it is commonly used in all types of jewelry, special care should be taken when wearing it as a ring as to not crack or scratch the stone.

Tanzanite is the perfect color pop—Even if you weren’t born in December, consider wearing this to gemstone to add beautiful color to your look!

Known for its striking bluish-green color, turquoise is an opaque gemstone that has been prized for thousands of years. Turquoise jewelry has been found in ancient Egyptian tombs, and most notably, King Tut’s burial mask included turquoise stones.

Today, the United States is the world’s largest supplier. The Southwest, primarily Arizona, produces the highest quality turquoise.

Turquoise is a softer stone, measuring just 6 out of 10 on the Mohs hardness scale, and should be cared for like most gems—keep it away from direct sun, as well as makeup, perfume, and oils.

Zircon

Zircon is the third birthstone for December, specifically its blue variety. This lesser-known gem comes in different colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and even brown. It is said that zircon can aid in sleep and even promote prosperity!

Most of the zircon supply is mined in Australia, which leads the world in zircon mining, producing 37 percent of the world’s supply (American Gem Society).

Slightly stronger than tanzanite and turquoise, zircon measures 7.5 on Mohs scale of hardness. Just like with any piece of jewelry, as long as you are careful when wearing it, you should be able to preserve its beauty for many years!

So December babies—Here’s the ultimate question: Which birthstone would YOU wear? (It’s okay to pick them all!) Let us know on our Facebook page!
